 Editor's Review
Zimbabwe is currently not high on any traveller’s destination list but if the present madness ends it can be, again, the most beautiful country. Victoria Falls – the ‘smoke that thunders’ – is awe-inspiring (“makes Niagara seem like a leaky roof” wrote one US visitor in the park entry book) and can for now be enjoyed from the Zambian side. The Zambezi above the falls is broad enough to allow leisurely canoe trips surprisingly close to the cataracts – though watch out for hippos. Immensely rich in wildlife, it’s not clear how the great game parks such as Hwange are now but if the situation changes and damaged or endangered species survive, the country has some of the best natural resources in Africa. The second city of Bulawayo to the south-west of Harare has always had a different, calmer, feel to the capital. Even in former times, the attractions of the wildlife meant that many visitors neglected the incredibly beautiful Eastern Highlands region, as well as the mysterious ancient ‘Great Zimbabwe’ immense ruined city whose ‘StoneTown’ translation gave the country its name.
