South Africa
"Set me down blindfold on the veldt, after however long a journey, and I would know instantly that I was in Africa.” So claimed a travel writer describing the unmistakable scents and sounds of the South African bush. Big national parks like the Kruger – which contains many private game reserves with luxury lodges and well-maintained wildlife – or better-kept secrets like the Madikwe reserve. Seeking out the usual safari ‘Big Five’ of lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard is increasingly matched by a marine version of whales, dolphins, sharks, turtles and penguins, from coastal centres such as Hermanus or Simonstown on the Cape Peninsula. Historic Cape Town itself also boasts some pretty good ‘wild night-life’ as well as the breathtaking view of two oceans from the cable-car ascended Table Mountain. A short excursion from the city takes you to the palate delights of the Cape Wine Route vineyards. Further afield, the 600 km Garden Route fringing the Indian Ocean, is everything its name implies, while the imposing Kwa-Zulu’s Drakenberg Mountains offer spectacle or skiing (May-Sept) as you wish.
Cape Town
Between its flat-top Table Mountain backdrop and a necklace of white-sand beaches keeping it from the sea, Cape Town and its climate are made to measure for those with a love of the great outdoors. But besides thrill-seeking bungee-jumpers, mountain bikers and cage divers eager to meet a Great White at close quarters, there are also more placid pleasures to enjoy. Chic restaurants along Camps Bay, shops and eateries on the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, sunsets from Signal Hill and day trips to wineries on the Stellenbosch estates. If that doesn’t set your head spinning gently, perhaps a ride on the revolving cable car above the Mother City will do the job. Laid-back Capetonians live up to their ‘Cape coma’ reputation. Join them.
