 Editor's Review
A French pearl set in the turquoise Indian Ocean although the rugged mountain interior might make uncut diamond a better metaphor. A still very active volcano, the Piton de la Fournaise, is accompanied by three dormant calderas to make exploring the centre spectacular but vertiginous. One reward is the high spa village of Cilaos but for most the best relaxation comes from the long stretches of silver, silky sand on the coast, while the eastern side offers more gentle hills and waterfalls. Diving can be good off-shore, though the location deep into the ocean might deter those bothered by thoughts of the bigger sharks. The capital Saint-Denis typifies the blend of tropics and French departement that makes the island so attractive. Lying to the east of Madagascar, people, culture and especially food, are a gorgeous mix of African, Asian and French influences. An important crop is vanilla and the exotic flowers and luscious tropical fruits offer delights to both eye and palate.
