 Editor's Review
It always helps to be a millionaire but, no, you don’t actually have to be one to enjoy Monaco. Although if you are, as well as the superb climate and sapphire blue Mediterranean, it’s rather nice that there’s no income tax at all. The city-state Principality, based on Monte Carlo, has been ruled by the Grimaldi family since 1297, receiving a popularity boost with the marriage of Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly. The harbour is packed with luxury yachts, and is one of the most spectacular Formula One track-sides for the Monaco GP. More expensive wheels arrive from starting points around Europe in the form of the renowned Monte Carlo Rally. Prize money tends to remain in Monte however, thanks to the famous Casino, one of the very first in the world, the location for “the man who broke the bank”, and still an entertainment venue of the highest order – the current entrance fee is only 10 euros. As a break from the tables and glitterati spotting, try the Oceanographic Museum in a splendid cliff-topping site, where Jacques Cousteau was Director for many years.
