Maldives
Sun and sea … and that’s it really. The absolute classic, utterly relaxed, beach holiday on any one of hundreds of isolated atolls. Yes, you’d be crazy not to stir yourself to explore the spectacular marine life, diving off-shore or wading into the ‘home lagoon’, and even the fast boat trips or sea-plane transfers from capital and airport Male are pleasantly exciting. A dropping coconut might startle with a thud, some of the out-to-sea bungalows could dampen a carelessly tottering post-dinner return, and sometimes you can even hear the turtles scraping along the sand after egg-laying. Even the fruit-bats are large enough to be interesting rather than scary. The sea is so clear you can watch incredible tropical fish from a jetty without even entering the water … and the sand is the best sand in the world, no question! It literally feels like silk, looks like spun gold (silver by moonlight), makes sunbathing like a nap on a goosedown divan. (If you really want all this and some highlife, some of the atoll developments are seriously luxury living ... but hey!)
