 Editor's Review
Macedonia is a 2,000 year-old country. Macedonia is barely 20 years old. Skopje, the country’s capital, is the birthplace of Alexander the Great, son of Philip of Macedon, who created an empire stretching from Italy to India. Skopje, the country’s principal town, is the birthplace of Mother Theresa, who was Albanian since at the time Macedonia did not exist. Confused? Well, the Balkans are like that. Macedonia today, having emerged first from the Ottoman empire and then from the break-up of post-war Yugoslavia, is a total patchwork quilt of influences from east to west, Moslem Turkish to Orthodox Slav, in everything from food to culture … with a strong Mediterranean input including, notably, excellent wines. A barely discovered natural paradise of mountains, lakes, rivers and gorges is increasingly accessible – including spectacular winter sports facilities. And the Skopje of Alexander and St Theresa offers Byzantine churches, colorful cobbled Ottoman streets, a bewildering choice of taverns-to-restaurants dining, where the lakes yield the most superb fish and the many variations of flaky-pastry ‘burek’ can become an addiction. A burgeoning nightlife completes an eye-opening list of attractions for a newly-aware traveller.
