Luxembourg

Luxembourg is the last remaining Grand Duchy in the world, with a history going back more than a thousand years. Exactly 999 square miles in area, it has a population of around half a million, boosted by recent incomers. Although ‘Luxembourg’ is both state and city (the inhabitants speaking ‘Lëtzebuergesch’ or Luxembourgish) the country also has rolling Ardennes forests and a share of the Moselle vineyards. The City combines a strong historic presence with modern multi-nationalism. The impressive Fortress dates from the 17th century, with other surviving fortifications underlining the description of ‘Gibraltar of the North’. The Grand Duke’s Palace has a superb Flemish façade while the courtyard of the striking Neumenster Abbey is the setting for open air summer concerts. Luxembourg’s other aspect is highlighted by the presence of headquarters for internet operations such as skype and e-bay together with a wide range of international organisations such as the European Community and Court of Justice. On a quirkier note, you can embark on a wildlife City safari – not a zoo, but a conducted tour of the many sculpted or cast animal figures located in the centre.
