Kenya
If choosing a safari for the very first time, Kenya’s Masai Mara is the place to start. Still enough space not to feel over-crowded but with an abundance of wildlife that guarantees amazing sightings to live in memory – or on camera - forever. The ‘Big Five’, of course; the herd ‘migration’ waves that turn round at the Mara; game-drives, waterhole stake-outs, river trips, balloon flights; unforgettable African dawns and sunsets. Plus a range of superb lodges and camps to suit every standard and budget. Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast makes for the best possible ‘second half’. Mombasa is a fascinating Afro/Arab/Indian city in its own right but also gives access to immensely long stretches of the most glorious silver-sand beaches. . And don’t overlook the off-shore islands such as Lamu, Manda, Funzi and countless tiny, often-deserted, atolls and coral reefs, teeming with tropical fish. Dive from an Arab dhow, snorkel straight off the beach, laze by in-shore lagoons that positively define ‘aquamarine’.
