Indonesia
Indonesia is an archipelago of 17,000 islands – many almost thought of as separate countries. Bali, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, are familiar travel ‘destinations’ while countless more are (as yet!) scarcely visited – Lombok, Sumba, Sulawesi – yet boast beaches, wildlife, temples, jungle and mountains to rival the most popular. Even Bali’s beach ’n club atmosphere is set at the foot of a towering central volcano. Indonesian wildlife is staggeringly diverse with unique primates from ‘forest-man’ orang-utans to langurs and the original ‘Mr Nosey’ proboscis monkeys. Dive or windsurf off the beaches by day – then watch the turtles struggle over the sands to lay their eggs at night. A blend of Buddhist and Hindu religions has created a marvellous mix of temple architecture and fascinating dancing and music – the sound of a gamelan orchestra will stay in memory for ever. Geologically, the islands are still active – as smouldering volcanoes prove; for even the experienced traveller, there is much that is new to discover.
