Bosnia Herzegovina
There is simply no way to talk about Bosnia as with the Balkans generally without recognising the history of conflict in the region. Sarajevo itself was, after all, the scene of the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand that sparked the flames of the first world war. Latterly the internecine strife that followed the break-up of Yugoslavia still evokes dreadful images. And yet the country is a beautiful one and Sarajevo is a magnificent city so that the peaceful present makes a visit immensely rewarding. Rebuilding goes on apace the reconstructed Mostar Old Bridge is a memorial that rivals Hiroshima in some respects. The country combines spectacular mountain scenery Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics with vast dense forests including National Parks such as Sutjeski, containing impressive waterfalls and great rafting streams. The capital has prestigious international Film and Jazz Festivals and a remarkable architectural array of mosques, Orthodox and Catholic churches. It was also only the 2nd city in the world (after San Francisco) to have an electric tram system installed in 1885, modernised, but still operating.
