Valentine's Day is only a week away, so if you're thinking of where to
take that special person in your life, we thought you might like some
inspiration, with a twist ...
... so
this month, we give you our Red
List of 5 places NOT to pay a romantic visit to in
2007!
1) Corfu, Greece
- In the south of the island, Kavos is Corfu's clubbing capital. Great
for partying, but perhaps not the most romantic of destinations. Don't
discount Corfu though - instead, spend a couple of nights in the heart
of Corfu's historic Old Town. Take a stroll with the locals in the
Spianada Gardens, sip drinks over looking the Venetian Castle &
harbour, and wine and dine in some truly romantic tavernas, hidden away
in the myriad of narrow back streets. For the ultimate in romance,
take the sea plane down to neighbouring Paxos for a truly special
getaway.
2) Algarve,
Portugal - If you
play golf and have little or no will power, do not take your golf
widow(er) here. With over 300 sunny days per year and dozens of golf
courses to choose from, you simply won't be able to resist playing
golf from dawn till dusk. Instead, leave the golf clubs at home and
come to the Algarve to treat your loved one to a truly romantic break.
Take a drive into the pine clad foothills of the Serra de Monchique,
pamper each other in the secluded spa hotel at Caldas de Monchique,
enjoy a romantic sunset meal at one of the many beachfront restaurants
scattered along miles of golden beach, or why not enjoy an open air
opera in the grounds of the Moorish Castle in Silves.
3) Queenstown,
New Zealand - Bungy jumping, jet
boat riding, para-gliding, aerobatics, mountain biking, skiing - if
only one of you enjoys these things, then this is perhaps not the
ideal destination for a romantic break. However, if you both thrive
off adrenaline fuelled adventure sports, enjoy great food and local
wine, and love the notion of luxury lakefront accommodation with views
to Lake Wanaka and the Remarkables, then there is no better place. OK,
the flight to New Zealand may be long, but you can always stop off in
Fiji for some tropical indulgence - better still, upgrade to First
Class and you won't want to get off the plane!
4) New
York, USA - Fancy
a quiet, romantic escape? Just the two of you, far away from the
madding crowd, with nothing to do except unwind in each other's
company? Well, don't come to New York then. The city truly never
sleeps and offers a wealth of experiences that rightly make it one of
the most exciting places to visit in the world. Window shopping on
Fifth Avenue, taking a ride in a Yellow Taxi or riding the Subway are
all essential activities, but Manhattan has so much more to offer - carriage rides in Central Park, outdoor ice skating at the
Rockefeller Center and, this month, the amazing Chinese New Year
celebrations ... maybe you should come after all.
5) Bruges,
Belgium
- It
is entirely possible that the delights of Belgian Beer pass you by,
you do not enjoy eating delicious fresh mussels, you are chocolate
intolerant, and have no time for fine lace or
diamonds. In that case, you really shouldn't come to Bruges.
For everyone else though, delightful and compact Bruges with its
cobbled squares, cafes and waterways could not be more perfect for
that romantic weekend away. Come in early April and indulge yourselves
at the world famous Chocolate Festival or wait a little and come in
July for the Klinkers Music Festival, where you can enjoy an intimate
performance in one of the many bars and cafes.
