In this month's issue, we throw the
spotlight onto one of Europe's top holiday destinations ...
Where in the world can you ride to the top
of a snow-capped peak, see a Dragon tree said to be 3,000 years old,
have a dip in a natural salt water pool, stroll along miles of sandy
beaches or indulge in a vibrant nightlife; and all on the same day?
... on Tenerife, the largest of the Canary
Islands, lying just off the
Atlantic coast of Morocco and the Western Sahara.
... so
this month, we give you our essential
guide to Tenerife

Playa
de Las Americas

Tenerife is perhaps
best known as a fun-filled family destination. Many holiday
makers head for lively Playa de Las Americas which hums with
life around the clock. Cheap food and drink and duty-free shops
spur many into action, while tennis, bowling, go-karts and
bungee jumping complement a full list of water sports. You can
even swim with dolphins in the Aqua Park! Mega-clubs and pubs
named after soccer stars line the area known as The Patch.
However, there is far more to Tenerife than the hubbub of Playa
de las Americas...

Volcanoes & Villages

The island of Tenerife is dominated by the 3,717 metre (12,194
feet) peak of Mount Teide. The volcano, the highest mountain in Spain and snow capped all year round, is the centre piece of
Mount Teide National Park - a striking lunar landscape with some
bizarre rock formations - check out the precarious Balancing
Rock 'Roque
Cinchado'. The drive into the Park is a treat in itself. Driving
is easy but spectacular as roads take you over lava fields and
through pretty villages such as Vilaflor, high above the bustle
of the coastal resorts.

Los Gigantes
Quiet and relaxing,
life centres around the sparkling marina, while in the distance,
the giant cliffs from which the place gets its name cut quite a
dash – a sheer drop of 800 metres (2,600 feet) in some places!
For the best view, take a boat trip out to sea. Los Guios Beach
lies around the point, with a smaller one at Playa de la Arena,
about a mile from the centre.
4)
Puerto de la Cruz
Old and new sit
comfortably side by side under the shadow of Mount Teide
volcano. The main curiosities include the natural saltwater pool
complex of San Telmo, the spectacular botanical gardens, and the
web of side streets that climb into the old town past embroidery
and handicraft shops, and fine old houses with typical Canarian
balconies.
5)
Los Cristianos
Slightly quieter but
no less popular than neighbouring Playa de las Americas, miles
of golden sands welcome families who love to splash in waters
that can be as warm as 25ºC (77ºF).
For shopping choices and some better dining out, head for the
Torviscas quarter.
