Lois Ronberg says:
"Sit at a restaurant and take yourself back hundreds of years as you imagine the Knights of the Order of St John strolling around this Valetta square because the magnificent St Johnís Cathedral was the home of the Knights of the Grand Master. This remarkable part of Valetta is just off the extremely long main street and it is an oasis for those wanting to take time out at a restaurant/cafť, do some shopping or just to sit for a while and take in the grandeur of the ancient co-cathedral. I visited with a friend who grew up in Malta and her pride at the history around this area was memorable. You will be missing a treat if you donít go inside the cathedral which you can do from St Jwann Square. Enter this baroque architecture building where you will see the most priceless works of art inside the cathedral and the museum adjoining it. Atefacts and treasures have been gathered here for centuries and it really is grand from floor to ceiling: the floor is an artwork in itself with checkered patterns on the tiles, which I have never seen anywhere else. As in all of Malta the history dates from 1530 when King Charles V of Spain allowed the knights to settle there. The time spent in this area was a tourism highlight for me - both in the square where we had a coffee and definitely inside the cathedral. It is well worthy of spending time on your Valletta walk if you like history, appreciate the grand surroundings and like to learn about treasures built up since the cathedral was built between 1573 and 1578 and since its commissioning in 1572. St Jwann Square and the Co-Cathedralís focus has to be the work of the Order of Knights Hospitaller of St John - or Knights of Malta. Be sure it include it on your Valetta visit, when next in Malta.
