Lanzarote for kids
“What about the kids? Will there be anything for them to do?”. That´s the first concern of most parents when it comes to booking a holiday abroad. Fortunately Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, is extremely child friendly like most other holiday destinations in Spain. The island provides a whole raft of activities to keep even the choosiest of children happy.
Best Beach For Kids...
Lanzarote boasts over ninety great beaches. And some of the most impressive stretches of sand are located in the resort of Puerto del Carmen. Here the main beach, the Blue Flag winner Playa Grande, is absolutely ideal for families as the sand shelves gently into the ocean in a rock free and safe environment. Facilities such as toilets, showers and refreshments are all close at hand too.
Eating Out With Kids...
The Spanish seem to have an endless well of patience when dealing with children. And it is an everyday event for large families to all eat out together
- with every generation represented.
As a result Lanzarote is a dream for frazzled parents – as many waiters are happy to take the strain of entertaining the kids. Restaurant Lago in Punta Mujeres is a real case in point. As here there´s also a lagoon, packed with fish and lobsters, located right in the heart of the dining room. Providing plenty of marine distraction for the more restless members of the party.
Best Excursion For Kids...
Children can get an even better view of the local marine wildlife up close and personal on board Lanzarote´s very own Yellow Submarine. This spacious sub is kitted out with state of the art viewing screens and portals making it child’s play to view giant rays, sharks and dolphins.
Submarine Safaris provide free transportation to and from their base in the upmarket marina of Puerto Calero and every child gets a free certificate to prove that they have enjoyed a trip on board. The cost is approx €52 for adults and €30 for children.
Best Day Out For Kids...
The Guinate Tropical Park, located in the north of Lanzarote close to Haria and the Mirador del Rio, is home to over 1300 exotic bird and animal species. These include toucans, ostriches, flamingos, parrots and macaws, as well as the latest star attraction – the Humboldt penguins – a rare and endangered species from South America who arrived at the park for the first time earlier this year.
Regular shows are staged throughout the day which are absolutely ideal for kids including bird shows featuring bike riding macaws and high wire walking parrots. Penguin feeding takes place every day except Thursday at 12 noon and 4pm. Admission costs approx €14 for adults and €5 for children.
