Holidays in Jerez - sherry, flamenco & dancing horses

With low cost airlines now flying into Jerez La Frontera airport (only 6 miles from the centre), the city now offers an excellent alternative to nearby Seville. Or, do as we did, and see the two together... only an hours drive between the two cities.

It's a small city and easy to walk pretty much everywhere. Start at the heart of Jerez within the remains of the 12th century Moorish walls. Here you'll find the main shopping street, Calle Larga, that runs through the city. Then head south to the streets around Plaza del Arenal and seek out a snack at some of the best taps bars in town.

Just nearby is the 11th-century Alcázar - an old Moorish fortress which contains a mosque converted into a chapel. Visit the third floor of the adjoining 18th-century Palacio de Villavicencioa and you'll find a camera obscura that projects real life moving images of the town on to a screen. Very cool!

From there, take a stroll through the patios and gardens towards 12th-century Arab baths, or if you would rather have the liquid refreshment inside you, why not head for one of the many sherry bodegas in the city such as Tio Pepe, Sandeman & Domecq. The fortified wine makes an excellent accompaniment to tapas and many of the bodegas offer sheery & tapas tastings.

For another Andalusian staple, head to the Centro Andaluz de Flamenco and learn more about the fast bulería style of flamenco that is famous in Jerez. For live shows, try one of the many small flamenco clubs that frequently host concerts and recitals. If dancing is your thing then Jerez is also well known for its cartujano ‘dancing’ horses. These are famous Andalucían thoroughbreds which are trained at the Royal Riding School. Shows are held on a regular basis but even just visting to watch them train is well worth it.

All in all, we found it Jerez to be a charming Andalucian city. And if you want to explore beyond the city then try the nearby beaches or perhaps the motor racing cicuit where the Moto Gp motorcycling is held.
