The Austrian Language

The main languages in Austria are German and Austro-Bavarian. The official Austrian language is German whilst Austro-Bavarian is spoken almost everywhere and has many different dialects.

The German language spoken by Austrians is pretty similar to the standard German spoken in Germany, however there are some differences in vocabulary particularly in relation to culinary & legal terms.

The Austro-Bavarian or Bavarian language is comprehensible to most Germans although there are several key differences in grammar. For example, the simple past tense is used with very few verbs in Bavarian.

Some example English words with Austrian German and Bavarian language translations:

Good day - Guten Tag - Grias God

Goodbye - Auf Wiedersehen - Hawediare

Apple fritters - Apfekiachal - Apfelkuchlein
