The Cuban Language

The language in Cuba is known as Cuban Spanish, a Caribbean dialect of Spanish. The Cuban language therefore features many Spanish words and phrases but often they have been changed or shortened. For example, consonants at the end of a syllable are often softened or removed completely.

These Cuba language characteristics occur in other Caribbean countries and in many dialects of Andalucia, a region in southern Spain. There are also many Cuban phrases that originally come from the Canary Islands due to the significant Canarian migrations of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Other words & phrases in Cuba's language come from all over the world including West Africa, France & America.

Some example English words with Spanish and then Cuban language translations:

Bus - guagua - autobus
Cake - cake - tarta
Grocery store - bodega - supermercado
