Our Favourite Ski Resorts
Probably the most difficult thing about a ski holiday in Ischgl is working out how to spell it!
Once you have mastered that then everything else is a breeze at this Austrian ski resort which is just brilliantly set up for the perfect ski holiday.
So what is so good about it? Well, for starters there is the fact that it's pretty high for an Austrian resort with the town itself at 1377 metres
and the highest lift at nearly 3000 metres... this means an excellent snow record and a good chance of late season skiing.
The second bonus is that you get to visit another country as well as Austria! Yes, the Ischgl pistes are linked to the ski resort of Samnaun
across the border in Switzerland which means you can have your lunch in Austria and then ski across the border for the perfect hot chocolate
later in the afternoon. Of course, the other non-chocolatey advantage is that you end up having access to a huge ski area known as Silvretta Arena Ischgl-Samnaun
with over 200 kilometres of pistes... wundebar!
Number 3 advantage is that the town of Ischgl is actually well set up for skiers... something which cannot be said for all resorts. You can ski straight back to many of the hotels
and chalets whilst the main cable in the centre of town means that you never have too long a walk in those heavy ski boots. Having said that it is well laid out, Ischgl is definitely NOT one of those characterless purpose built ski resorts. It has actually preserved a lot of its original character to the point where the central hotel we stayed in was just 2 doors down from a barn full of milking cows!
Last but not least is that Ischgl actually manages to cater for many different types of skier and apres-skier. The pistes are challenging enough for experts whilst offering plenty of nursery slopes (and excellent ski schools) for beginners. At night, family orientated hotels offer excellent childcare and gourmet food whilst if you are looking to party all night there is more than enough going on in town to keep even Bodie Miller amused!
