Although many German autobahns are not subject to a speed limit, it's worth getting used to the higher speeds of others before even thinking about attempting them yourself! The motorways themselves are excellent and, with no tolls to pay, are a fast and cheap way of getting around the country.
In German towns and cities, there is an increasing tendency to give priority to traffic coming from the right. This can be very confusing to tourists, particularly on main roads, and does tend to cause accidents if you are not fully alert.

A fire extinguisher and and visibility jackets are now also compulsory in Germany and must be kept in your car at all times.
