Lois Ronberg says:
"My first experience of Valetta's old town streets stays with me as clearly as if I am watching a video. It was Christmas Eve, my hosts suggested we go in to town to see the Police Band playing Christmas carols. What a memory! The darkness brightened up by glorious festive decorations around the ''band's stage'', the music glorious; visitors and locals out to enjoy the splendour of it all. As we stood at the gate we looked down the main street which had ''arches'' lit up with trillions of Christmas lights. As far as the eye could see - it was just FANTASTIC. My Maltese hosts told me that each year new lighting combinations are set on the main street and next year they become the lights for side streets. As we walked down the main street, the side streets shone again... they were just as impressive as those highlighting the main thoroughfare. In daylight, the walk is just as interesting, no matter if it is the main street or many of the tiny, narrow other streets. I noticed the statues of Mother and Child in many alcoves - something new to me at the time but now more familiar as they feature in many Catholic countries. Malta's streets offer ancient buildings, views out over forts and the sea which has featured so dominantly in its long history, for good times and bad. As you walk the streets of Valetta you really do get the feeling that it has been an important part of history in the Mediterannean. Malta is truly a striking place to visit and its capital city is best walked at leisure, so get a good guide book and see it at its best - on foot.
