Salzburg Travel Guide

Q: Are there still TI centers in small german and austrian towns where local accomodation bookings can be arranged for stays of one night while biking along the Danube river?
A: Yes, tourist information centres in both Austria & Germany offer this service. Some charge a small fee but they are usually the best choice for finding you a last minute bed for the night.

Lois Ronberg says:
"History abounds as you stand in the Kapitelplatz in Salzburg’s old town. Whenever I’ve been there the square has been full of tourists and locals because it is from here you visit some of the city’s great, historic attractions. Call at the rather different cathedral, play chess with oversized pieces, on the big board set in the pavement, see St Peter’s cemetery where some Sound of Music scenes were shot, take a funicular up to Hohensalzburg Fortress or make your way through the streets and take a walk up the steep hill to this magnificent, dominating tourist attraction high above Austria’s delightful city of Mozart's music history. Back down in the large, open square, on one of my visits there was a massive five-day festive market going on so we joined thousands of others to roam amid the stalls offering, food, craft, art, souvenirs, leather-ware, Austrian folklore bands and other local fare. Another time we visited the cathedral and I have to say this is a bit different to others in Europe. I was taken with the massive and many orange-framed oil paintings on the pale walls and ceilings. I remember the light comes in here so effectively - this is a cathedral you should visit. Through the archway, attached to the cathedral, there is a neat photo opportunity as the horse and cart rides come through his historic part of the city. Kapitelplatz (Chapter Square) is situated south of the cathedral, underneath the huge, rocky cliff which bounds one side of old Salzburg. You access it by walking through the old town, turn towards the cathedral, walk in front of it and head for the funicular information centre. In the corner of the square, nearby the cathedral, you will find the public toilets, sometimes rather important when you’ve been strolling around the old town and imbibing some of the light refreshments available at many pubs, cafes and restaurants.
