Salzburg Travel Guide

Q: Are there still TI centers in small german and austrian towns where local accomodation bookings can be arranged for stays of one night while biking along the Danube river?
A: Yes, tourist information centres in both Austria & Germany offer this service. Some charge a small fee but they are usually the best choice for finding you a last minute bed for the night.

Lois Ronberg says:
"It is handy to have a central point where you can get your bearings and be confident in taking the next steps in your meandering when you are in a new town. The Staatsbrucke Bridge over the River Salzach, which separates old and new Salzburg, is just the place to meet friends, take amazing photographs and to sort out where to go in this wonderfully interesting, historic Austrian city. It is one of the vehicular/pedestrian bridges over the wide river which got its name from salt. Salz means salt and for many years it was the main route for shippping salt through Austria. It actually flows through Germany and Austria on its 225 kilometre journey. Staatsbrucke Bridge has hotels, bus stops and good shopping nearby and an ideal vantage point to view the dominant Hohensalzburg Fortress high on the hill behind the older part of Salzburg. It also affords riverside views upstream and down of the attractive, multi-storeyed buildings for retail and private housing, along the river bank, and several church spires as well as other Salzburg landmarks. On the newer side of the river you should visit the Salzburg Puppet Theatre and alongside this the world renown Mirabell Gardens where some Sound Of Music scenes were filmed. Another pedestrian-only bridge over the River Salzach is upstream from the Staatsburcke Bridge and it is the one where the family, wearing green patterned ‘curtains’, ran across the skinny bridge, danced on the bank and had a picnic. One evening I made a special trip down to the Staatsbrucke Bridge to take some night-time photos and they are just magic: made interesting by the light on the water, what a memory! There were plenty of others on the bridge just standing there talking, sitting and generally using it for another Salzburg experience. From the bridge, the fortress looks higher, much more imposing when lit up and of course the old town comes to life, in a different dimension, after dark. As bridges go, the Staatsbrucke Bridge offers much more than a way to cross a river. "
