Fetiyeh Travel Guide

Q: What would you consider to be the most remarkable and unusual historical site in turkey?
A: So many choices but one of our favourites is the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul which was a cathedral for over 1000 years and then a mosque for nearly 500 years.

Philip Collins says:
"The Turkish shop keepers all seem to be men. Mum wanted to go in the carpet shop, just to look, no intention of buying, just browsing but it is a shop after all and not an art gallery. We were sat down and asked if we wanted apple tea or another drink, we declined. Mum was asked what carpet she was looking for while two other men started bringing out carpets. I thought to myself, how are we going to get out of this and get out of the shop ha ha ha. I had a brain storm, I said "Carpet no good, I am allergic to dust mites, in my house, England, I have wooden floor, no carpet in house". All three blokes started chatting about dust mites, we managed to get out the shop". If you do go into a carpet shop, start to feel uncomfortable, then just mention the dust mites and that you have wooden floors, special bedding etc.....you love the carpet but "no good for you, as you have dust mite allergy". If you pick a carpet and pay in cash for it, not sure what happens if it is not delivered to England or the carpet you paid for doesnt arrive but a poorer quality one arrives. Turkey is not in the EU and most of us don't speak Turkish and there probably isn't a phone number for the local trading standards officer as there probably isn't one. "
